Dokeos appears very promising at first, but the community support is poor, questions on the forum don't get answered or responded to in any reasonable time and generally getting help if one experiences a problem is a huge frustration.
1) I cannot locate any options to delete a course once I have created it. Since courses will change, as tyhe requirements of the learners change, it is important to be able to delete/rename courses. 2) I cannot determine how to modify the name of course codes. Because of changes to the structure of our training portal, I need to be more specific in the course code names, but there does not appear to be any editing tool to change the course codes. 3) I don't want the slideshow to appear on the Login page, but do want to add slideshows to a separate Home page (for the Learners) and also to create slideshows for the individual course pages. How do I do these things? 4) It is necessary that different users be taken to different pages, after login. For instance, Learners should be taken (from the login screen) to a home page of courses. Administrators should be taken to a dashboard page, where they can access detailed information about the progress of the Learners. And, there is the Owner of the organization, who wants to be directed (immediately after login) to an overview page, where he can view one or two graphics that provide him with a snapshot of Learners progress. I cannot find any means of modifying how users are redirected, after login. Short of completely rewriting the PHP code - which skill I do not have - what are the options for making such modifications? Both deleting courses and changing course codes would seem to be very basic practices. Am I missing something? As for removing slideshows from the login page, but being able to add them to subsequent pages, instead, as well as creating different redirect pages after login, depending upon who is logging in -- there an administrative area I have overlooked, where these tools exist? For me Dokeos is a dream come true. I am a motivated educator with a non-existant budget, and just couldn't find anything that met my elaborate needs at a $0 price. At first I played with http://exelearning.org/wiki and that was cool, but they stopped all development in 2010 and that became a big issue. Then I found Dokeos, and realized what I thought was the ultimate poor man's elearning solution was nothing but a toy. Dokeos is a professional-level, full blown e-learning solution, and it's free. There were some small challenges along the way. Installing challenged my limited knowledge of mysql. It took a bit of time to learn all of the features, because it is packed with so many. For all of that their documentation and support forum were extremely helpful. I am in awe. They should hire me as a PR person (sales is primarily a transfer of enthusiasm). Must add that I am very familiar with html, and found myself like a kid in a candy store: almost anything can be customized. What defines 'learning' is the exposure to something new, practicing it, and then getting feedback on your practice. Dokeos allows that process beautifully, online. There are 30 quizzes templates to choose from, a discussion forum, assignment tool, dropbox tool to share files, a gradebook and full blown reporting suite, private groups, chat tool, and so much more. Creating courses is easy, and also has many ready-made templates to choose from. You can easily embed sounds and videos (no need to install a Red5 server). The pro (for fee) version adds even more valuable features. I have started saving my pennies. When I grow up I will buy it.
